Checklist for Going Green

By Gail Nickel-Kailing on May 13th, 2009

Going GreenTo really “Go Green” you must go beyond paper and extend beyond the pressroom to all facets of your business – from the supply chain to the customer. FSC-certified paper and soy ink do not equal sustainable printing.

Looking at sustainability holistically, we’ve compiled this checklist for greening your company. Please add additional items; there are lots of alternatives not on this list!

  • Adding green benefits to products/services
  • Becoming carbon neutral
  • Buying carbon offsets
  • Changing to more sustainable materials sourcing
  • Creating more environmentally friendly packaging
  • Donating money to environmental efforts
  • Forming partnerships with environmental agencies/NGOs
  • Improving sustainability of current products
  • Improving sustainability of supply chain
  • Launching employee programs reducing environmental impact
  • Launching new green products
  • Participating in community events focused on green issues
  • Producing a sustainability report
  • Reducing your carbon footprint
  • Repositioning your brand to be more green
  • Seeking LEED certification for buildings
  • Sharing your sustainability story online and offline
  • Using alternative energy sources, such as wind, solar, etc.
  • Increasing the emphasis on green in marketing communications

What are the additions you’d make to this list?

This can be combined in a way with the donating money to environmental efforts. My “day-job” company funds the planting of 3 times as many trees as we use in paper each year. Not only does this help to replenish some forests suffering from degradation in Central America, but it also is providing fair-wage jobs to workers in the region.

There’s already an extremely comprehensive “checklist” available as part of a holistic green certification program called the Sustainable Green Printing Partnership. This certification is nationally recognized and even Toyota is requiring it’s print partners to have this certification. It’s all there in one package. Go to https://www.sgppartnership.org.
