It’s Green! Wine in a Box

Packaging is a logical place to start when developing green products. And wine packaging – wine in a box – is a first step. Lest you turn your nose up, a number of brands of wines sold in boxes have won national attention.

We have it directly from a trusted source – Adam Dewitz of WhatTheyThink – that Bota Box wines are “decent.” That’s his opinion after finishing a box of Old Vine Zinfandel.

What’s the “green effect” of the brand’s new packaging?

  • Produces 85% less landfill waste than traditional glass package
  • Printed on recycled paper containing 100% post-consumer fiber
  • Box is 100% recyclable
  • Printed on Kraft paper which doesn’t need to be bleached like white paper
  • Paper layers are bonded together with cornstarch instead of glue
  • All inks and coatings are soy based instead of petroleum based
  • The bag does not contain phthalate plasticizers or Bisphenol-A (BPA)

To learn more about green packaging, take a look at the Going Green Reading List where you’ll find several books on sustainable packaging.

But was the printing done in a sustainable manner? See the criteria to be a certified Sustainable Green Printer at http://www.sgppartnership.org. SGP takes a holistic approach to printing and goes beyond the substrate and ink.
